[original page title: Dragonlance-style Board]

Candy wants one.

This would be fantasy but generic-ish. Emphasis would be on plot and characters, not worldbuilding (i.e. not making your own species and stuff, we'd just use the standard ones).

All the preceding paragaph is negotiable, but the point of it is to encourage people to be confident in posting, and so hopefully active!

Separately(?)... we also had an idea for a pirate board a while back; Candy mentioned "Sän the six-armed piratess".

Any thoughts? Setting? Plot ideas? We have one vote from Anke for not "ragtag bunch of heroes saves the world".

Hm, how about setting it in a city. Should be plenty of places to got. And, er... trying to find someone? Just an idea.

Sän has since rooted deeply into Arken (and the wiki entry is horribly out of date), unfortunately, and I've no wish to rip her out of it and put her in a world she doesn't belong. .) Her story kind of went its own way.

City sounds good, at least as a starting point - no one knows where we'll end up. :p But I'd really like a generic no-frills DnD-like world, something that we don't have to build and learn. I wouldn't want to take any distinct, pre-existing DnD world though, like Krynn, it's just the mood I'm after with that Dragonlance comparison.

How about we see what kind of characters everyone would like, maybe that would spring up some ideas? I'm leaving Middy strictly out of this (at least as you know her *eg*), but I have Annelore the anti-adventurer, generic fantasy human traveler. I'd be quite happy to throw her on a board to get tangled up in things.

Well, I have no idea what the generic, no-frills DnD world looks like, apart from there being some weird categories into which people are sorted.

I've got Sylvie Katamara, a young, female mage. But I guess if you all want DnD magic, which I don't know, I'd have to come up with something else. Maybe a not-entirely-canon version of Daren.

I just don't have a way with words at all these days, do I. >.>

I do not mean that we should play DnD, according to any of it's rules. I do not mean that we should pay attention to anything that reads in a single RPG rulebook or fantasy novel.

It's just that to many people "generic fantasy" = "DnD-type fantasy", so I used those words to hopefully get the point across better, but apparently it just complicated things. So forget everything I said about DnD and Dragonlance, those were comparisons only. Nothing else.

Generic (high?) fantasy. Humans, elves, dwarves, dragons, whathaveyou. Jolly bartenders and rangers and mages and warriors and everything that you would expect to find in a generic fantasy world. Nothing terribly specific, like kenders or other speshul races that don't commonly appear in "standard fantasy." Any kind of magic you like, any kind of wizards you like, any kind of elves you like. It might be nice to have some kind of consensus on certain things (eg. where does this world's magic generally come from, are the elves nature-type or highelf-type) but not required in any way.

No rules, no classes, no rigid "this is how magic works and your sorcerer can't do that!" As long as it works together with the whole thing and we don't run into gaping holes in logic. ;)

Eek, I'm not upset. >.> I just sound like that?

Note to self, sprinkle posts with smilies from now on. (But be careful to make them one-eyed.)

Sorry, I really am not upset. .) I just tried to make it as clear as possible that I didn't mean we should play DnD.

The Annel-- oh, sorry, Annelore. Never mind. *innocent grinz0rs*

I'll gladly take a dwarf, providing I don't have to give him a Scottish accent. *chuckles* Or I'm willing to try a classical elf, since mine are so different that they can hardly be called 'elves'. I'd quite like to take a stab at-- er, that is, I quite fancy trying to write a dwarven cleric.

(Since I know no specific DnD background apart from Lolth, it would have to be just my guess at what dwarven spirituality is like.)

I find it so extremely hard to come up with anythng new, it seems.

I've got my paws in this one. Just give me brainpower to find something new in my colossal brain cavity.

This sounds like precisely the sort of story I enjoy the most. Unfortunately, I may not be available too consistently for a little while, so I may just have to sit this one out or join it late if that's okay with everyone else.

Aw. I hope you can hop in later.

And Ráwen thinks a fantasy board needs a half-elven thief of dubious reputation and foul language. The unsettling part is how much she's persuading me of it.

Jumping in later is fine!

C'mon Ráw, you know you want to.

Hem, hem.

Okay, so what would we like to do with the town? ^^ Go on a quest to look for something or someone or get something back? Go save the town or someone (but not the world)?

I have NPC I'd like to try out as the primus motor of the board; someone to set the ball rolling. But I don't know what ball we'd like that to be.

Well, if thrown ideas are wanted...
If we assume that the characters don't know each other, they could be looking for someone for different reasons. Say, there's a mage, and someone needs their expertise on a question, someone else wants to kill them, someone else wants to buy/steal/destroy some artifact or book they own...

CandyTwine: Candy 2005-08-21 17:49

Ooh, I like that idea. :D I might even volunteer said NPC to be said someone, thought that would take some of my originally planned private fun away. *eg* But at least Annie would fit that plot idea quite well.

MuttTwine: Mutt 2005-08-21 18:31

Most definitely thirded! And private fun is good.

I think I'm in with the dwarf, who wants the person's expertise on a technical mining-metaphysical question.

Ráwen is a thief by trade, so if there's something valuable to be had, she's going to be after it. She doesn't steal from allies -- but unless we're arranging back history between characters, nobody on this story is her ally yet. *bweg*

So what's the scoop on the the Zwerg(en)berg thing?

Disquieting minds want to know!

Zwergberg = very small mountain
OK, you won't find it in a dictionary, but thinking of Zwergpudel and the like, that's what it reads as, for me.

Okay, so, umm. I have no witty suggestions for the board name, when do I ever? But it would be nice to get this going. I can take the first post if I manage to kick myself enough, once we get a board name and do a final roll call and all.

In the meantime, if inspiration strikes anyone, feel free to make an opening post here and I can move it over if necessary!
